It’s October soon, and excitement kicks into both adults and kids when days are nearing the month end. Halloween, the day that’s given a lot of attention for candies and costumes by both kids and adults.
Supermarkets make a huge amount of profit selling candies. In 2015, more than 157 million Americans celebrated Halloween, with eight in 10 millennials saying they were planning something fun with their friends. Total spending in 2015 was expected to top $6.9 billion, with the average American celebrating planning to spend $74 on decorations, candy, costumes and more according to Internet resources.
Americans purchase nearly 600 million pounds of candy a year for Halloween. An incredible 90 million pounds of chocolate candy is sold during Halloween week, taking a strong lead compared to other holidays.
A pair of new studies finds that average per person Halloween spending ranges from $169 to $183. To put it another way, if you were to boycott All Hallows’ Eve throughout your life, you could save nearly $12,000 by the time you turned 65. And that’s not even including the cavities from all the candy you’d consume.
Compared to how many people can afford candies and invite cavities not many can afford dental care. Due to the extreme costs of procedures, people always neglect one of the basic needs of the body.
However, having said that, if the problem persists in the candies that lead to many cavities, what if the candies had an alternative that could minimalize or even bring zero impact to dental.
Alina Morse, from Detroit now 12, has put an end to all parents who refrain their kids to afford a candy once in a while for health reasons. This young entrepreneur invented a lollipop AKA zollipops which is healthy and edible by many who have allergic diseases to candies or peanut butter.
Her invention of healthy lollipops come from a visit she did to the bank with her dad when the teller offered her a lollipop she craved, which her father denied her to eat. Knowing that lollipops are the third most cavity friendly candy, she looked curiously at her father questioning, “can’t we make a lollipop that’s actually good for your teeth?”
Her curiosity of the question was very adamant that she insistently asked about it a 100 times to which he replied to do some research.
Alina Morse, was a young girl built with many curiosities’ and questions. In many ways, Alina Morse was a typical 4th grader who loved to dance and sing around the house and mostly spends her time reading books.
Her inquisitiveness towards understanding the possibility of having a healthy lollipop she could eat, made her start researching. She questioned her dentist and dental hygienist about the ingredients for natural teeth cleaning. Then she referenced YouTube to learn the process of candy making.
After two years into research and later laying her hands trying to cook healthy lollipops at home, her father, a business consultant, suggested using a nearby candy manufacturer. Alina had a friend who is peanut & gluten allergic and Alina herself is allergic to artificial colors and dyes. She decided to make healthy lollipops in a way she and her friend could have them.
Alina’s friends supported with the sampling and testing of the lollipops. She wanted to make sure they were able to eat and make sure the ingredients were well compatible for them as well.
After finally figuring the right mix of healthy ingredient to make her candies, she didn’t have a hard time to figure a name out for her candies. Offering her little sister Lola a candy she made, she asked “Do you want to try a xylitol lollipop?” said her father.
“Her sister had a little challenge saying the name, so she said Zollipop.” The rest is her story.
Having everything together, she and her father secure a meeting with The Whole Foods and their first retail placement “They loved our product. They loved the idea, and they loved our mission,” Alina says.
It was noted to be the sugar-free confections that use a combination of natural sweeteners like xylitol and erythritol, which studies, including some in the International Journal of Dentistry, have found to reduce plaque and oral bacteria.
Now Alina Morse who was featured in Steve Harveys show for her outstanding invention of Healthy Lollipops is around 10,000 stores across America, including Walmart Kroger, Office Depot and soon at Toys ‘R’ Us. It is accounted they have sold $ 5 million dollars worth of her products amidst giant companies who has already dominated the market.
Based on the past three years they have doubled the sales and in 2018 they are set to triple the sales, according to Alina Morse. Their aim is to increase distribution to new retailers and expand availability on Amazon.
